Description
The spines on hedgehogs, which are hollow hairs stiffened with keratin,
are a reliable way to identify them.
Unlike the quills of a porcupine, their spines are not toxic or barbed,
and they do not easily separate from their bodies.
The immature animal’s spines, however,
typically fall out when adult spines take their place.
This is known as “quilling.”
Additionally, when an animal is ill or under a lot of stress,
its spines may shed.
Although blonde hedgehogs can be found in the Channel Island of Alderney,
hedgehogs are typically brown with light spine tips.
